6 of Wisconsin’s Best Drive-Ins and Dairy Bars

Drive-ins with carhops, diners with jukeboxes and ice cream parlors with sweet treats like sundaes, cones, and floats. Let’s take a whirlwind tour of some of our state’s iconic hangouts—from the seasonal and nostalgic to the delightfully dairy!

You’ll feel like you’ve taken a step back in time when you walk into the Drive-In Restaurant in Grantsburg. The atmosphere screams 50s rock and roll; records dot the walls and take you back to poodle skirts and leather jackets! Grab a cheeseburger and a root beer float while you enjoy hanging out with friends and family.
  3. Wayne’s Drive-In (Cedarburg)
    WaynesDriveIn
If hot rods and carhops on roller skates are more your style, roll on over to Wayne’s Drive-In in Cedarburg. Thursday nights during the summer are cruise nights where you can check out the classic cars while you wait for your cheeseburger and ice cream sundae to be delivered on wheels!
  4. Albatross Drive-In (Washington Island)
    Albatross
Hop aboard the ferry to Washington Island to check out the Albatross Drive-In where Wisconsin cheese curds are king and fresh local ingredients are used to make 60 flavors of thick malts and shakes. Be sure to grab an Alby burger!
  5. The Pearl Ice Cream Parlor (La Crosse)
    ThePearl
Wisconsin is home to a number of ice cream parlors, but The Pearl in La Crosse boasts an authentic 1930s soda fountain and confectionery. The Peterslie Family makes homemade ice cream and confections for their customers. Enjoy the thick, rich malts served with whipped cream, a cherry and the rest of the tin, all while listening to music from decades of the past.
  6. Ferch’s Malt Shoppe and Grille (Greendale)
    Ferchs2
This old fashioned malt shop in Greendale has dubbed itself “the home of over one million flavors,” as it offers frozen custard creations crafted on a cold marble top using any number of toppings and flavors. After enjoying a custom-made sundae, dance the night away with the music of the 50s and 60s played on the Wurlitzer
