Take Small Wellness Steps for Big Results in 2018

Discover Wisconsin

January 4, 2018

So often, we start the New Year with big resolutions when it comes to our health and fitness.  “I’m going to lose 50 pounds.”  “I’m going to run seven days a week.”  “I’m done with all carbs.” While it is great to have wellness goals, it is important to keep in mind what is realistic and sustainable over the course of 12 months.

Every day, we have the ability to make micro-decisions about our health and wellness that will lead to long-term success.  This might include:

  • Putting down the soda, both regular and diet. Instead reach for plain water.  Even better, flavor it with fruit or try a carbonated mineral water.

  • Avoiding processed foods, opting instead for real, whole foods.

  • Moving as much as possible. Remember, small steps add up and can be broken up during the day.  Park farther away from where you are going or take the stairs if an option.  Stand up every hour and walk around.

  • Getting enough sleep. Studies show that in addition to being well rested, plenty of sleep can help you avoid weight gain and consuming too many calories.

  • Reducing your stress by breathing deeply for a few minutes.

  • Unplugging from your electronics will help you to be present in the moment.

As 2018 kicks off, I encourage you to make wellness a daily part of your life.  The WCA Group Health Trust is proud to sponsor “Wisconsin Wellness Matters” during the Discover Wisconsin show.   Being active in Wisconsin is not a difficult thing to do for most folks. From hiking the bluffs of Devil’s Lake State Park, to biking down the Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail, to taking a nice stroll along Lake Michigan, our state has something for every body and ability.  Let’s all get up and get active in 2018!

The WCA Group Health Trust

was created when county officials joined together to create an employee benefit program that would meet the unique needs of local governments. Today, their founding principles still remain at the core. WCA Group Health Trust is governed by officials from participating units of government and school districts, making the organization more responsive to local healthcare needs.
