3 Wisconsin Cheeses to Up Your Burger Game

Discover Wisconsin

February 22, 2019

On this weekend’s episode of Discover Wisconsin, we’re showcasing eight unique cheeseburgers from around the state. But what if you want to mix up your burger experience at home? We asked Cheesemonger Jeff from Fromagination in downtown Madison to help us take our cheeseburger game to the next level.
When selecting a cheese to go on your burger, Jeff recommends keeping in mind the texture of the cheese. “What I think about when I’m picking out something to go on a burger is that it needs to melt nicely. You don’t want anything too soft that will run off. It needs to have a firm texture in order for it to sit and melt well on your burger.” He went on to recommend these three Wisconsin cheeses as prime examples of how best to top your burger.

For a Classic Cheeseburger
Imperial Buck from Deer Creek Cheese in Sheboygan
This aged Cheddar is the perfect choice for elevating your traditional cheeseburger. The Imperial Buck has sweet, creamy, and nutty flavors and a fantastic texture that will melt perfectly on a burger (and make excellent Mac & Cheese or cheese sauce). Jeff says “This cheese would be a classic companion on most any hamburger.”

For a Burger with a Kick
Maaantarey Jack from Hook’s Cheese Company in Mineral Point
If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, Jeff recommends the Maaantarey Jack from Hook’s. It’s a goat milk pepper jack with a red pepper blend, so it has zing without being too spicy. It has a tangy taste and is a fresher take on your traditional cheeseburger. Jeff recommends topping this cheeseburger with greens and fresh tomato.

For a Down-to-Earth Burger
Dunbarton Blue from Roelli Cheese Haus in Shullsburg
For those looking for something totally different, Jeff recommends adding one of Wisconsin’s most popular cheeses and their featured artisanal cheese, the Dunbarton Blue cheese from Roeilli Cheese Haus. It’s a cheddar with blue veins running through it that give the cheese a punch of earthy flavor without being too overpowering. It’s a similar texture to the Imperial Buck cheddar, so it will melt perfectly on any burger. Jeff recommends pairing this cheese with mushrooms or other earthy veggies to top your burger.
A huge thanks to Jeff and the Fromagination team for all the great information! Visit them online at Fromagination.com or in Madison at 12 South Carroll Street on the Square for lunch and to sample their amazing cheeses.
